Abstract

The technology described in this document is new - so new and different, in fact, that some people call it "disruptive technology." Yet, viewed in the context of the history of computing, and the notion that "the network is the computer," Ace technology is the obvious next step in the evolution of high level programming languages for the network computer.

Ace is a research project in Sun Microsystems Laboratories, a small R&D division at Sun Microsystems, Inc. The project has produced a network programming model, along with an application programming language (with several specialized sublanguages) and a compiler for it that can generate and deploy a working application in a variety of architectures. As of this writing, the technology is available for selective evaluation, but it is not a product.
